CD Cover - The single cover has been thought out very well as it links in with the narrative of the music video extremely well. The music video is about a man trying to get away from a zombie apocalypse which is trying to give everybody who hasn’t yet managed to escape the American city black eyes. In low angle/mid shot image, we can very cleverly see two females playing on a games machine and inside of the screen we can see the image which has been used on the album cover for this song of the lead singer from the band running down an empty road. This has been used to denote that the girls playing on the games machine are getting so into playing the game, that they are slowly turning into a zombie and turning the game from being just a game to real life. The image used inside the games machine is the one that is also used on the bands album cover.
The colours that have been used in this cover remind me of very dirty dull sepia colours which connotes that the arcade in the image may have been abandoned again linking in with the music video and the abandoned city. The thing which is very strange in the image is the green, yellow and red post. I find this unusual because it doesn’t really link in to the rest of the colours used in the image and instead stands out, maybe symbolising something such as 'individuality'. It also could be making reference to a flag and society. After carrying out further research, I have come across the Bolivian flag which is red, yellow and green. I have found out that the green stands for fertility, the yellow stands for mineral resources, and the red stands for bravery. This does relate very closely to the song, as after watching the music video, I know that he is the final 'human-being' in the world that he is living in and is trying to escape from being given the contagion as it will turn him into a dead zombie. When he is captured, no new life is going to be introduced into the world that he is living in as there is no life. He is also trying to find sources of food and drink to keep himself alive whilst at the same time staying brave as he is the 'last' one left in the world. This could therefore be reference to the flag as it does link in very cleverly with the meanings of these colors.
The image reminds me of an old fashioned American image that was taken years ago and has now been re-edited into a colour image. This may connote that the producers of the single cover wanted to make this specific cover stand out to the target audience and they have done this through using very strange imagery as they know that this is what will attract an audience and sell the CD. The mise-en-scene of the two female characters connotes that they are care free of their image and are just focused on playing the game. The colours do not necessarily co-ordinate with eachother and match the surrounding colours used in the arcade. However, as they have been positioned next to the strange colourful post, this does tell me that the artist is trying to make a point of placing it in the image, maybe it symbolises that the main star wants to be on the brighter and much happier side of the pole where he isn't being trapped and captured by the zombies.
The single title has been displayed on the cover of the CD in an unconventional place which we don’t really see very often. Usually when you buy a CD, you have the masthead along the top of the cover and then the artists name either right underneath or along the bottom. Instead, with this cover, we have the song title linking into the band name ‘Bastille’. The font of the single title has been written in sans serif capital lettering, which is the same font taken from the bands logo which co-ordinates it all together. Laying out the text like this could be representing Mount Vesuvius that erupted in Pompeii. Typography has been used within the band’s name, instead of using the letter A, a triangle replaces it, this may suggest the bands individuality and wanting their brand name to be recognised and stand out on shop shelves. The triangle could also represent 'The Illuminati' which is a group of people claiming to possess special enlightenment or knowledge of something and this can therefore be used as a device to represent fear and add mystery to the album cover.
Other typography has also been used as the 'O' in Pompeii has been typically placed around the main star in the arcade computer screen. This could represent that the main star has been captured and is trying to escape but not necessarily succeeding. The two women playing the computer game may be slowly transforming into the zombies and are getting more and more addicted to the game and trapping the artist. Due to being aware of the Pompeii Disaster with Mount Vesuvius and the total destruction of the Western society, the 'O' could also be emphasising on a destruction that is likely to happen with the main star (being caught and given the disease).
Moreover, the band members may have decided to make their single cover a little different because they want to be individual and do not necessarily want to copy what everybody else does. This genre of music and the song seems to come across as being very edgy and this may be the reason for the layout and the choice of image. The band may want to make people think about the image and the only reason that I really understood it was because I had listened to the song lyrics carefully and understood the narrative of the video.
No images of the band have been used on the single cover which is again unconventional. This tells me that the band don’t rely on being recognised by their appearance but more by their name and brand indentity. Also, the artist has followed conventions with the typography sizes as they have displayed the band name in bigger lettering compared to the name of the single.
The single cover fits into the 'indie rock' music genre due to the fact that conventions have been broken and the uniqueness of it. Indie rock artists like to put their own style on their products and don't like to follow other artists for inspiration. At first it seems to be a strange album cover but once you have watched the music video, it becomes clear as to what the image is about. In the music video, we see the main star running through the same arcade to try and get away from the women who are trying to give him the black eye contagion and therefore in this very cleverly put together image, we see the the two women now chasing him in the computer screen. This adds mystery and makes the audience understand what is happening and how they now link together.
